Period Underwear Materials: Specify Every Layer
The right fabric depends on your customer, climate and price. We help you choose and then test the combination.
Skin-Contact Layer
Cotton, organic cotton, bamboo viscose or modal blends. These feel soft and breathable against the skin and carry fluid toward the core.
Absorbent Core
Polyester or microfibre terry and similar absorbent fabrics, sized to the capacity you want. Thicker cores hold more but add bulk.
Leak Barrier
A waterproof membrane, usually TPU or PUL, set between the core and the outer shell. We use colourless transparent or white TPU film where applicable.
Outer Shell
| Fabric | Feel | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton/spandex | Soft, breathable | Everyday, teen, sleep |
| Organic cotton | Natural feel; GOTS option | Eco-focused ranges |
| Bamboo viscose/spandex | Smooth, cool | Comfort-led ranges |
| Modal/elastane | Light, silky | Premium everyday |
| Nylon/spandex | Smooth, strong | Seamless, lace-trim, shapewear |
| Polyester blends | Durable, quick-dry | Mesh, sport-adjacent |
Trims
Elastic, lace, sewing thread and labels, selected to match the fabric and wash performance. We use water-based glue and natural-fibre sewing thread.
What We Avoid
We do not use antimicrobial finishes such as silver, copper or triclosan. We do not use formaldehyde-based finishes or stain-resistant finishes. We bleach with oxygen or peroxide, not chlorine.
Certification Coverage
Our OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate covers period panties in the knitted fabric constructions it lists. If you want a fabric outside that list, tell us early so we can check coverage. GOTS applies only to styles in 100% organic cotton.

Period underwear fabric questions
Which fabric should we choose for our first period underwear range?
Start with the customer, climate, flow level and price. Cotton/spandex suits familiar everyday comfort; modal and bamboo blends offer a softer handfeel; nylon/spandex supports smooth, seamless and shapewear-led styles.
Can the shell and gusset use different fabrics?
Yes, and they often should. The shell controls look and fit, while the skin-contact layer, core and barrier control comfort and performance.
Does OEKO-TEX cover every fabric we might choose?
No. The certificate covers the fabric constructions listed in its scope. A new fibre, coating or trim needs to be checked before you repeat the claim.
Can you source organic cotton or recycled materials?
We can review organic and other specified materials, subject to availability, documentation and the certification claim you plan to make.
Bamboo Viscose Period Underwear Manufacturer
Bamboo viscose is not one generic material
The word “bamboo” can describe different fibre routes and blends. For production, specify the exact fibre type, blend ratio, yarn or fabric construction and expected handfeel. A bamboo viscose/spandex jersey behaves differently from a bamboo-cotton blend or a smooth synthetic shell with a bamboo gusset.
What to define in the fabric brief
Specification Why it matters Fibre composition Drives the label claim, fabric cost and test requirements Knit and weight Affects drape, opacity, gusset bulk and drying time Stretch direction Changes fit, recovery and sewing behaviour Colour method Affects minimums, shade control and testing Skin-contact fabric Controls the feel against the body Outer-shell fabric Controls look, durability and stretch
Cotton Spandex Period Underwear Manufacturer
The job of elastane
Cotton supplies comfort and a familiar handfeel; elastane supplies stretch and recovery. The blend percentage and knit structure determine whether the garment returns to shape after sitting, washing and wearing. A simple fibre percentage is not enough to specify performance.
What to control in development
Area What to test or specify Stretch Directional stretch and recovery target Weight Opacity, handfeel and gusset bulk Shrinkage Length and width change after the agreed wash cycle Seam behaviour Puckering, bulk and edge stability Surface Pilling and appearance after wear Fit Rise, leg opening and gusset placement
Modal Period Underwear Manufacturer
Why brands choose modal
Modal is selected for a smooth, fluid handfeel and a softer drape than many basic cotton jerseys. In period underwear it can work as a skin-contact layer, an outer shell or a blend component. The final choice depends on opacity, recovery, gusset bulk and how the garment will be washed and worn.
Nylon Spandex Period Underwear Manufacturer
Why use nylon/spandex
Nylon, also described as polyamide, is often chosen for smooth surfaces, strong stretch and good shape recovery. In period underwear it can support seamless, bonded, lace-trim and shapewear-adjacent styles where a cotton jersey would feel too bulky or visible under clothing.
Where construction becomes the differentiator
The same shell fabric can produce very different products depending on bonding, edge finishing, gusset shaping and panel placement. We evaluate the following on the sample: edge curl, bond strength, gusset flatness, stretch recovery, opacity and the feel of the seam against the body.
Period Underwear Fabric Sourcing
Start with the product, not the fabric catalogue
The fabric should follow the intended product: the flow level, silhouette, target customer, climate, price and care expectations. A lightweight modal jersey that feels excellent in a showroom may not be the right shell for a bonded high-waist brief. We define the performance brief before shortlisting qualities.
