Why wash testing belongs in development

A period panty is a functional garment that may be washed many times. The first sample can look correct and still fail later because the shell shrinks, the elastic loses recovery, the gusset edge curls or the barrier delaminates. Those risks need to be tested before the style is approved.

What to observe

  • Length and width shrinkage against the approved tolerance
  • Stretch recovery at waist and leg openings
  • Gusset flatness, edge curl and layer alignment
  • Bond or seam integrity
  • Barrier appearance and function
  • Colour change, bleeding and print cracking
  • Care-label legibility and instructions

Set a realistic wash protocol

The wash method, temperature, detergent and drying condition should reflect the intended consumer routine. A test that uses a different care process from the label is not a useful validation. We agree the protocol with the buyer and record it with the sample.

Design decisions that affect durability

Fabric choice, heat setting, seam allowance, adhesive, membrane type and edge construction all affect how the product ages. If a change is made after testing, the effect should be reviewed rather than assumed. A material substitution can change shrinkage and barrier performance even if the visual sample looks the same.

From test result to claim

Use the result to set care instructions, product expectations and any durability claim. Avoid saying a product will last a certain number of washes unless the test protocol and result support that exact statement.

Frequently asked questions

Do all period underwear styles need the same wash test?

No. The protocol should reflect materials, construction, intended use and the buyer’s market requirements.

Can wash testing be done on a sample before bulk?

Yes, and it should be. It may also be repeated on production to confirm consistency.

What is the most common wash issue?

Shrinkage, edge distortion, elastic recovery and barrier delamination are common areas to review, but the actual risk depends on the construction.
